Abstract/Description
This takes us over seas to the Philippines, March 19, 1899. We are down near the lake called Laguna de Bay, ten miles S.E. of the city of Manila. Two days before this company G of the Washington Volunteers captured 150 Filipinos near here and seized a quantity of ammunition. A church out here (at our right) was taken and occupied by the American troops and a sentinel posted in the steeple to watch for movements of the enemy. These stone breastworks have also been hurriedly thrown up around the church to defend the ground. Now the Filipinos are retaliating for yesterday. The natives are out of sight in a bamboo thicket at our left. and from that shelter they are sending a sharp fire. Our men here behind our own active guns. Our companies H and D of the Washington Volunteers, under command of Major Weisenberg. We have lost two men already. To-day. Besides having an officer and thirteen privates wounded. It is impossible to know, as yet, what has been the loss of the insurgents out there among the bamboos, but these guns of the Washington boys keep up a resolute fire and something is bound to happen where their bullets strike. See maps of country about Manila, also newspaper files and magazine articles.
This is a wide shot of a column of soldiers hunched behind a stone-wall barricade with their rifles pointing out towards an unseen enemy. Smoke emerges from many of the rifles.
The sinking of Battleship Maine in Havana harbor in 1898 was followed by protests that sparked the declaration of War on Spain on April 24. Call for volunteers brought more than 100,000 men from training camps. There are more stereographs of this war than any other-Underwood & Underwood alone published more than 2,000 images.
